For Dr. Terry Clark's blogging class, we were tasked with evaluating a blog in our subject area on the following criteria:
1. Quality of Writing
2. Effectiveness of typography
3. Attractiveness of layout
4. Use of visuals
5. Overall strengths and weaknesses
6. Why do you like it or dislike it
The blog I found to research and evaluate is called The Big Lead. It's a sports blog with multiple writers.
1. Quality of Writing- Obviously, with a multitude of writers comes a multitude of skill levels and writing styles. However, based on the articles I've clicked I really like what I see. The writing gets straight to the point and gives good analysis on the subject matter of the post.
2. Effectiveness of Typography- I really like the font size and colors they use, particularly in the post titles and headers. However, I'm not a fan of the font they use in the body of their posts. In my opinion it's hard to read because the letters and words don't really flow together like they should.
3. Attractiveness of Layout- I think they did an exceptional job here. It's easy to look at and well-organized. I wouldn't change a thing here.
4. Use of Visuals- Excellent job on this front. Lots of good visuals; not only pictures of the athletes, but stat graphics as well. A+.
5. Overall Strengths- The use of visuals may actually be the best thing about this blog. I love how the stats are pertinent and perfectly placed in the text where they belong when addressing a particular subject. Also the organization of the site looks very official and professional.
Overall Weaknesses- There really isn't much here aside from the body text problem I mentioned earlier. Also, navigating the site could be easier, as parts of the screen scroll down whereas others don't.
6. I like it because it has a lot of interesting opinion pieces pertaining to sports that have good data and the like to support the presented positions.
